Resource Becoming: A Nonprofit Catalyst for Sustainable Mining

Welcome to Resource Becoming, a nonprofit educational programming and research firm dedicated to transforming the mining sector into a sustainable and socially responsible industry. We create opportunities for intersectional women in the mining sector to help organizations attract and retain high-performing talent.

Our approach merges traditional business acumen with a deep understanding of the communities we serve, the diverse talent we empower, and the processes we implement for them to flourish. Our commitment as a nonprofit enables us to focus on creating a lasting impact that benefits people, planet, and prosperity.

Peggy Bell, Equity Diversity and Inclusion

Peggy Bell, Executive Director

Peggy Bell is a dedicated social advocate and strategist with over 15 years in the metals and mining sector. Known for her ethical, data-driven approach, she has been a participant in leadership teams with portfolios greater than 1.4B USD. Peggy’s early involvement in social justice initiatives laid the groundwork for her current focus on mentoring, sponsoring, and volunteering with equity-deserving organizations.

A respected public speaker, she has graced platforms including the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator and TEDx, advocating for responsible project development. As host of the LinkedIn Live show “The Changing Face of Mining,” she elevates diverse voices and champions the belief that social innovation and technology can harmonize to benefit society’s triple bottom line: people, planet, and prosperity.

Peggy is more than a consultant; she’s a catalyst for meaningful change in the mining industry, merging social progress with economic gains.

Alison Bell-Patel, Curriculum Developer

Alison Bell-Patel is a seasoned educator with nearly two decades of experience teaching kindergarten through grade 6 with the Waterloo District School Board. Holding a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph, Alison specializes in reading, math, and special education, and has additional certifications in sexual abuse prevention and mental health first aid.

Committed to continual professional growth, Alison has completed a range of development courses that enhance her expertise in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. These include training in Black anti-racism, Indigenous education, and unconscious bias, which further solidify her commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment.

Alison is passionate about creating curricula that are tailored to diverse learning needs, having developed educational programs across various grade levels. Currently working towards her first administrative role, she has obtained qualifications in teacher leadership and administration, underlining her commitment to educational excellence.

Outside the classroom, Alison sits on the board of directors for Argus Residence for Young People, a charity focused on homeless youth. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes nurturing students who may not fit the traditional “norm,” and she takes a practical yet compassionate approach to her work, ensuring her classroom is a caring and conducive space for growth.

In a field where individual attention is crucial, Alison stands out for her dedicated efforts in making education accessible, meaningful, and equitable for every student.

Sheryl Brown, CPHR, SHRM-SCP, CTMP, RPR, Mentorship and Coaching Developer

Sheryl Brown is a dedicated Human Resources professional with over 15 years of diverse experience in recruitment, team management, and organizational development. Sheryl most recently served as the Human Resources Manager for Hudbay Minerals Group, where she led a dynamic team in achieving strategic objectives and improving organizational practices.

A recent graduate of  Integrated Disability Management at the University of Fredericton, Sheryl combines academic insight with practical experience. Her previous roles include HR Manager at Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, where she was lauded for her ability to cultivate an energetic and diverse professional environment. 

Sheryl’s passion for recruitment is evident in her philosophy: “Love what you do, and it will never feel like work.” Her services extend beyond British Columbia, inviting organizations seeking talent acquisition to explore synergies with her. Known for her strong emphasis on fit, quality, and long-term relationships, Sheryl boasts a client repeat rate of 98%.

Dorena Quinn IAMGOLD

Dorena Quinn, CHRO

Dorena Quinn serves as the Senior Vice President of People at IAMGOLD Corporation, leading the company’s human resources since 2018. With over two decades of experience, she specializes in organizational transformation, talent development, and fostering an inclusive workplace culture that serves as a competitive edge for IAMGOLD. Prior to this, Dorena held key roles in media research, technology, and financial services, focusing on HR strategy and operations.

Her leadership extends to serving on multiple boards, including the Mining Association of Canada and the Mining Industry Human Resources Council – Safe Workplaces for All, a committee aimed at prioritizing equity, diversity, and inclusion in Canada’s mining sector.

Recognized for her contributions, Dorena was an Excellence Awardee for the HRPA Woman of Distinction Award in 2022 and is listed among the WIM100 – 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining. With a Master’s degree and various industry certifications, she is a frequent speaker and a driving force for change in the HR and mining sectors.

As part of Resource Becoming’s board, Dorena ensures that we exceed the needs of our partners, focusing on equity, diversity and inclusion and creating programming excellence to transform the mining sector.

Lindsey Schultz, MBA

Lindsey, CEO of MRC Recruiting, was practically born into the mining recruiting industry as the daughter of MRC founder Robert Schultz. Starting from handling resumes as a child, she has risen through the ranks, serving as receptionist, intern, HR recruiter, and corporate vice president before assuming her current role in 2021. Lindsey oversees the company’s vision and management while maintaining a full search portfolio focused on long-term client and candidate relationships.

Lindsey forms strategic partnerships to offer services like resume editing and professional coaching, emphasizing fostering diverse and inclusive teams.

Lindsey is optimistic about mining’s future, seeing it as vital to everything from energy to tech. She is committed to building teams that contribute to the industry and drive the global shift toward decarbonization, improving mining’s reputation along the way.

As an active participant in Resource Becoming’s board, Lindsey helps to create programming aimed at creating value-based organizations in the mining sector.


Beth Borody

Beth Borody is a pioneering sustainability leader and mining executive with a focus on advancing responsible and inclusive practices in the industry. In her executive roles, she has been instrumental in shaping and implementing ESG strategies, policies, and stakeholder engagement, thereby enhancing the company’s social license and reputation. Her nuanced understanding of ESG requirements is matched by a keen awareness of industry risks and opportunities.

Beyond her corporate work, Beth is the founder of Femina Collective, a social enterprise dedicated to empowering women in mining through mentorship, networking, and advocacy. Named one of the Globe and Mail’s top 50 Changemakers in Canada for 2021, she is actively committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within the sector.

With extensive experience in Sub-Saharan Africa and North America, Beth is also an advocate for feminism, Indigenous rights, and climate action. Her multi-faceted approach to sustainability and ESG has made her a key player in reimagining a more responsible future for the mining industry.

As part of Resource Becoming’s board, Beth helps to provide strategic leadership and partnership creation.

Mary Juetten, CA, CPA, Esq., GCB.D, CDI.D

Mary Juetten, CA CPA, Esq. GCB.D, CDI.D, is a seasoned international executive and entrepreneur with over 35 years of leadership experience across various industries. Specializing in sustainable growth, she has led successful turnarounds in both Canada and the U.S. A law school graduate; Mary founded a software company focused on risk identification and mitigation for small businesses.

Her diverse career spans from auditing roles at Richter and EY to consulting with Price Waterhouse in sectors like education and natural resources. She served as VP of Finance at Vancouver Community College for seven years, followed by two decades in executive roles within the Engineering & Consulting, technology, and natural resources sectors.

Recently, Mary worked as an organizational effectiveness consultant for a mining company in Saudi Arabia and mediated commercial disputes in San Francisco during COVID-19. She holds degrees from McGill and Arizona State University and earned a Masters of Law in Alternative Dispute Resolution. Mary is the author of two books focused on key performance metrics and business strategies for the legal industry.

As an active participant in Resource Becoming’s board, Mary helps to ensure proper governance.  Furthermore, Mary helps to provide knowledge into programming to create value-based organizations.

Joanna Hodge, Ph.D., PGeo

Joanna is a Professor of Geology in the Geological Technician Co-op Program at Fleming College and a registered Professional Geoscientist with PGO. Boasting fifteen years in resource exploration and development, her expertise covers a spectrum of minerals including gold, nickel, and copper. Her field-based exploration experience extends across Australia and Canada, making her a Qualified Person for 43-101 report writing and technical disclosure.

Beyond her academic and professional roles, Joanna is a fervent advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion within the geoscience community. She champions Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and is especially committed to making field education accessible for learners with disabilities. Her community outreach efforts are extensive, aimed at demystifying geoscience for the public.

An experienced content creator, Joanna is proficient in various software and platforms, further broadening her impact in the educational landscape. Her multifaceted background uniquely positions her as both an industry expert and a force for social change within geoscience education.

Joanna helps to ensuring that Resource Becoming’s programming is technically sound and applicable to the changing needs of mining. Furthermore, Joanna helps to ensure that our educational series are fun, interactive and accessible to our clients.
